Daryl Hall and John Oates have created a new genre by mixing two different style, a sort of rock and soul. Their influence as such innovators has been felt around the hip hop music scene years later, when in 1988 De La Soul sampled their I Can't Go for That (No Can Do) single. To their credit, it should be said that Daryl Hall and John Oates were so open to the concept, that they themselves performed the De La Soul version two years later at a live performance in New York.
