In 1989 the British indie pop group - the Housemartins – disbanded, and vocalist Paul Heaton and drummer David Hemmingway decided to form a new group – Beautiful South. Their previous group used almost jazzy guitars and witty, wry lyrics, but the Beautiful South had a more sophisticated, jazzy pop sound, layered with keyboards, R&B-inflected female backing vocals and, occasionally, light orchestrations.
