Motorhead claim, rightly, that they came before metal did, thus that the classification of the band as a heavy metal (or speed metal0 group are wrong. Rock and roll or heavy metal, Motorhead are groundbreaking, or at least have been, with a style that was not purely punk rock and yet was as energetic as any.
