About Louis Armstrong
Besides mastering the trumpet and single-handedly making it a legit solo instrument in jazz, capable of carrying a tune and improvising melodically, Louis Armstrong has also invented jazz singing to a large degree. His voice was distinctly graveled, and his style freely improvisational and expressive. In singing, both Billie Holiday and Frank Sinatra are indebted to Louis Armstrong, with holiday acknowledging Satchmo's feeling in his voice.
