The first album released by Lenny Kravitz, 1989's Let Love Rule was met with only mediocre success in the US. Meanwhile it excelled in Europe and elsewhere around the world, with some classic Lenny Kravitz tracks as the title song and I Built This Garden For Us. The reasons for the mixed reviews were that Lenny Kravitz was viewed either a truly funk meets rock artist or simply overwhelmed by his influences from the 60s. Ten years would pass and Kravitz would win four straight Grammy Awards for his music.
