Dexter Gordon used to recite the lyrics of songs before playing them, then break out on his tenor saxophone with a large, clear, metallic sound, much like John Coltrane whom he had influenced and been influenced by in turn. The peak of Dexter Gordon's jazz career came, most critics agree, during the 60s with a series of recordings for Blue Note Records, including Doin' Alright, Dexter Calling... and Our Man in Paris.
